Social Networking

Social networking has integrated within our society to become a tool to connect with others in a variety of ways. One way social networking has been used is in terms of job recruiting. Recruiters have found new ways to utilize these sites, such as Facebook and LinkedIn, in order to find high quality candidates. Especially with LinkedIn, a site built for online professional networking, recruiters are able to type in key words and narrow down their search and look for candidates they think would fit their job description. This website connects over 8 million professionals around the globe so it could also be used as a marketing tool for their brand. These companies are able to post up job descriptions with the right key words in order to connect an individual with a potential job (Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting: NPR). Social networking is beneficial in this way as it can be used as a medium between companies and individuals looking for jobs. It also can be used to connect people with the same interests whether it be for an artist, movie or TV show. People with similar interests can come together on a platform to build an online community and even keep in touch with or create new friends this way. Social networking being used as a platform to connect an online community can be beneficial due to the fact that individuals can keep in touch with friends who may live far away and wouldn't have the time or money to meet in person.

However, even with these benefits social networking does have its "dark side". One important issue, which will be the topic of my term paper this semester, is privacy within social media and networking. Individuals can gain access to private information sometimes with just a simple click of a button. In the article, "Facebook Privacy Is So Confusing even the Zuckerberg Family Photo Isn't Private", it said "Facebook privacy settings are too confusing, and if you really don't want intimate photos out there, don't put 'em on Facebook. But also, don't expect to hide something if you do — everything can be shared and re-shared these days" (The Atlantic Wire). Mark's sister's family photo found its way on a strangers tweet - all because that stranger is the friend of her sister. Even when the photo is taken down, having the photo posted in the first place allows others to share and re-share it and spread it across the internet. Also with all the hacking scandals that has taken place that has exposed thousands of users data on these platforms, it's safe to say how private are our accounts. Additionally with the knowledge we have now about how many of our social networking accounts are collecting our data and selling this information to third party advertisers, we have this debate on whether or not it's a violation of our privacy or if it just comes with the territory of putting our information online.

In my opinion, technologies has both its benefits and drawbacks but it has so much more room for growth in the future that can influence our society positively. It can help individuals gain access to a wealth of information that may aid people in curing diseases, find maybe a missing person or even can aid in police investigations. While privacy is still an issue to be wary about, this doesn't mean we shouldn't stop in the advancement of these technologies. We should find a balance between both security and these potential benefits.
